2022 Ford Explorer vs. Chevrolet Traverse

2022 Ford Explorer vs. Chevrolet Traverse

Overview

No matter how picky a driver gets, there are several midsize SUVs that could serve their needs, but having so many choices can make finding the ideal model difficult. Let's help narrow down the options by comparing the Chevy Traverse and the Ford Explorer.

2022 Exterior Updates

The new 2022 Chevy Traverse gets an updated grille and reworked front, headlights, and rear fascias. Ford provides new sport appearance options for the Ford Explorer XLT. The classic Explorer retains the boxy body and duck-bill front, as well as the same exterior paint hues. Just like every year, the Ford Explorer has more options and customization than its Chevy alternative.

Engine and Performance

When properly outfitted, the 2022 Traverse can tow up to 5,000 pounds. The 2022 Explorer outperforms that figure, with a maximum loaded trailer weight of 5,600 pounds when fully equipped. Starting configurations for the Explorer also get better fuel economy than the Traverse, with 20 city mpg over the Traverse's 18. Both are tied for highway fuel economy at 27 mpg. The Traverse can use an active all-wheel-drive system or the standard front-wheel-drive configuration, though it may struggle compared to the Explorer, which comes in four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive.

Both SUVs are comfortable and strong, and the Traverse does have the option to cram in an eighth seat. However, the Traverse's all-wheel-drive system has been criticized, and its 310 horsepower rating is rather limiting compared to the Ford Explorer's 300-400 horsepower range and superior torque. To seal the deal, the 2022 Explorer has a longer list of trim levels and options to get exactly the kind of performance you need.
